A late 18th Century Cameo Later Mounted By Codognato

A late 18th century cameo later mounted by Codognato, the oval carved agate measuring 2.2 x 1.9cm and depicting Platone's profile, set in yellow gold with black enamel decorations and tapering shoulders. The cameo is circa 1790, the mount is circa late 20th century, signed Codognato.

Platone or Plato, was an important ancient Greek philosopher of the Classical period. He was born in Athens probably in 428 BC, and he died in 348 BC. The philosopher was deeply influential in the western philisophy, with his doctrine called Platonism.
