Abraxas è una divinità di origine gnostico-mitraica spesso raffigurata su gemme usate anticamente come talismani magici. La divinità, infatti, rappresenta la mediazione tra l’umanità e il Dio Sole, ovvero tra il cielo e la terra, mentre nella tradizione persiana rappresenta l’unione tra bene e male. Il nome Abraxas, inoltre, figura in testi greci di carattere magico come auspicio di potenza e invincibilità, e in testi cristiani come altro nome di Cristo. La divinità viene rappresentata in una forma ibrida, in questo caso, infatti, è raffigurato con una testa leonina e un corpo umano ma è comune trovarlo rappresentato con il volto di un gallo, il busto umano e le gambe serpentine. Abraxas, inoltre, è sempre accompagnato da due utensili, solitamente una frusta corta e una spada o tamburo, simbolo del suo ruolo di custode e protettore.  La divinità, inoltre, è sempre inserita all’interno di una forma ovale, immagine cosmica e perfetta, in cui figurano anche cinque stelle, simbolo dei pianeti, e talvolta altre due ascrivibili al Sole e alla Luna. In questo intaglio, inoltre, è possibile scorgere l’immagine di uno scorpione, storicamente simbolo di forza interiore e resilienza, e del serpente, simbolo di protezione e saggezza, elementi che si legano al numero 7, ovvero il numero di lettere che compongono il nome Abraxas, numero generativo, cosmico e alchemico.

Abraxas is a deity of Gnostic-Mithraic origin often depicted on gems used in ancient times as magical talismans. The divinity, in fact, represents the mediation between humanity and the Sun God, or between heaven and earth, while in the Persian tradition it represents the union between good and evil. The name Abraxas, moreover, appears in Greek texts of a magical nature as a wish for power and invincibility, and in Christian texts as another name for Christ. The deity is represented in a hybrid form, in this case, in fact, he is depicted with a lion head and a human body, but it is common to find him represented with the face of a rooster, the human torso and serpentine legs. Abraxas is also always accompanied by two tools, usually a short whip and a sword or drum, a symbol of his role as guardian and protector. Furthermore, the divinity is always inserted within an oval shape, a cosmic and perfect image, in which there are also five stars, symbol of the planets, and sometimes two others attributable to the Sun and the Moon. In this carving, it is also possible to see the image of a scorpion, historically a symbol of inner strength and resilience, and of the snake, a symbol of protection and wisdom, elements that are linked to the number 7, or the number of letters that make up the name Abraxas, a generative, cosmic and alchemical number.
