L’intaglio su ematite raffigura Uto, ovvero il nome greco della dea egizia Wadjet, rappresentata solitamente come un cobra (Uraeus), sebbene fosse diffusa anche l’iconografia che la vede ritratta, come in questo caso, in una forma ibrida con la testa di leonessa cinta dal disco solare e il corpo serpentinato. Wadjet è una delle dee dinastiche faraoniche a cui spettò il Basso Egitto e, il suo simbolo, divenne un importante ornamento dei faraoni, i quali erano soliti apporli sul copricapo in segno di legittimazione del potere e protezione, successivamente si diffuse la sua raffigurazione su gioielli ed amuleti.

The intaglio on hematite depicts Uto, which is the Greek name of the Egyptian goddess Wadjet, usually represented as a cobra (Uraeus), although the iconography that sees her portrayed, as in this case, in a hybrid form with the head of a lioness surrounded by the sun disk and the serpentine body was also widespread. Wadjet is one of the pharaonic dynastic goddesses to whom Lower Egypt belonged and, her symbol, became an important ornament of the pharaohs, who used to affix them on the headdress as a sign of legitimization of power and protection, later her depiction on jewels and amulets spread.
