L’intaglio romano, datato tra il I e il II secolo d.C., raffigura la dea Minerva, come si evince dalla presenza dell’elmo che la identifica come la dea della guerra giusta e della saggezza. L’iconografia e il significato di Minerva derivano storicamente dalla dea greca Atena, la quale anticamente era allo stesso modo protettrice di qualsiasi forma artigiana. In questo caso la dea è raffigurata di profilo su un intaglio di forma ovale in calcedonio, mentre la montatura in argento presenta segni di un’antica placcatura d’oro.

The Roman intaglio, dated between the I and II centuries A.D., depicts the goddess Minerva, as can be seen from the presence of the helmet that identifies her as the goddess of just war and wisdom. The iconography and meaning of Minerva historically derive from the Greek goddess Athena, who in ancient times was also the protector of any form of craftsmanship. In this case, the goddess is depicted in profile on an oval-shaped chalcedony carving, while the silver setting has signs of ancient gold plating.
