The agate cameo, dated to the II-III century AD, depicts a dog sitting in profile. In Roman times, dogs had significant roles as guardians and fighters, also highlighted in legal codes. The iconography recalls the famous mosaic of Pompeii with the inscription "Cave Canem".
The cameo, made of agate and with an ovoid shape, dates back to the roman imperial period, in particular to the II-III century AD. It features the image of a dog sitting in profile, which even in Roman times played a fundamental role, so much that it is mentioned in legal codes with the function of guardian, protector and fighter. The iconography and appearance of the dog, with its tapered muzzle, recalls one of the most famous images of antiquity, such as the mosaic of Pompeii depicting a tied dog and accompanied by the inscription "Cave Canem" (lit. "Beware of the dog").
