Roman Carnelian Intaglio Depicting Arione Gold Ring circa 2nd Century A.D

Oval intaglio engraved with a balance surmounted by the profile of Arione, son of Poseidon, flanked by two dolphins. The myth presents Arione as an important cither musician, saved from the dolphins in the open sea. The orange carnelian intaglio figures the profile of Arione, two dolphins at each side and a balance at the bottom. This last should be linked to the justice towards the mariners that attempted to kill the musician and take all of his belongins; they ended up with being executed. Roman art, 2nd century. Top size 21mm x 15mm Size:8 Weight: 12.50 grams.
