Ancient Roman Gold Ring with Agate Eye Intaglio 2rd Century AD

Ring set a cabochon agate eye on a pivot with a design representing Venus in front of the statue of Zeus. Within a later gold exhibition-style swivelling ring mount Size: 7 2/4 Gross weight: 2.94 gr. Ancient or Antique agate “eye” bead ring. These agate “eye” beads are rare and were valued from ancient times, as a protective amulet against the “evil eye”. The use of mounting ancient Roman gems on gold settings to carry out jewels was typical of Italian goldsmithing from Renaissance up until the 19th century.
