A Lapis Lazuli Gnostic Intaglio Ring 2nd-3rd Century AD

A Roman period magical or 'Gnostic' lapis lazuli intaglio with a seated lion with a solar disc holding a scarab, seated on a crocodile which in turn above a scorpion. On the reverse is a man headed lion holding his arms above his head with 'IAW' inscribed above his head, to a later swivel mount on a half hoop ring. Intaglio 1.6 x 1.0cm. Size 7 Gross weight: 6.36g. Minima mirabilia, that translated means “tiny wonders”, and that is how Romans used to name precious stones. These lasts did not have a value in being decorative objects, but on the contrary, they were valued for their magic powers. Indeed, these stones were used as amulets in order to ward off diseases and bring luck to the owner.
